The five pillars of Islam

1. **Shahadah** (declaration of faith): This is the first pillar of Islam and is the most important. It is the statement of faith that "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger."

2. **Salah** (prayer): Muslims pray five times a day facing Mecca. The prayers are performed at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and after dark.

3. **Zakat** (charity): Zakat is a form of charity that is obligatory for all Muslims who have reached a certain level of wealth. The amount of zakat that is due is calculated based on a person's income and assets.

4. **Sawm** (fasting): During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to evening. This means that they refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual relations.

5. **Hajj** (pilgrimage): pilgrimage to Mecca is prescribed as a religious duty for Muslims at least once a life.
